We are excited to upgrade an important piece of equipment this week! A visual field test is often ordered to detect early changes from glaucoma. Glaucoma is a condition where high eye pressure causes optic nerve damage. The damage can then impact very specific areas of the peripheral visual field. If undetected, a patient will develop severe tunnel vision or even complete blindness. Using this new instrument, we will be able to test for the earliest changes from glaucoma. Using advanced algorithms and statistics, the computer will give the doctor a detailed report which would show areas of potential concern.
We like to tell patients that blindness from glaucoma can often be prevented. We just need to make sure the eye pressure is normal, the optic nerve looks healthy, and if necessary, order a visual field test. Let us know if you have any questions or concerns about glaucoma.
